Why you should opt for the PDQ machine

If your business accepts card payments, then you want a machine that will make your work easier and therefore lead to more sales. Although all businesses are not the same, all customers want the same thing; convenience and good customer service. This is what makes a PDQ machine such an important tool for businesses that accept card payments.

The idea behind the PDQ machine is pretty simple. We all know that the world moves at full speed these days. Everyone wants things done quickly. The PDQ machine allows for transactions to be completed in a quick and efficient way, saving time for everyone involved.

Why should I opt for the PDQ machine?

Using the PDQ machine makes a lot of sense for any business. The fact that it uses both chip and pin and the magnetic strip technology means that you don’t have to turn any card-carrying customers away at any given time. Here are some of the other reasons why the PDQ machine is definitely the way to go:

Customers want to save time

We live in a fast world. Everyone wants to just get what they want, swipe their card and move on to something else. Using a PDQ machine will satisfy your customers in this regard and they will always be happy to come back to you because of your fast service.

Safe transactions

This is yet another great aspect of the PDQ machine. Before the chip and pin terminals, cases of card fraud had been rampant with the previous technology and its limitations exposing cardholders to acts of fraud. Now with the PDQ machine, customers can feel a lot safer swiping their cards on this machine. The PDQ machine requires a higher level of encryption and makes it harder for a person’s information to land in the wrong hands.

Universal

A PDQ machine can be used in all types of environments and almost everywhere in the world. So if you are a merchant who sells from event to event, accepting card payments is now much easier than it was before thanks to the PDQ machine.

No telephone lines needed

Most PDQ machines are wireless devices. So if you are in a venue where there are no telephone lines or no electricity, a PDQ machine will still suffice. This is not the case with most of the other card payment machines in the market.

Affordability

If your business is still in its early stages, you want to save as much money as possible in order to keep reinvesting in the business. In addition to the PDQ machine having the potential to add to your customers, it is also quite affordable.

It reduces the risk of handling too much cash

Handling a lot of liquid cash poses a security risk in addition to being a potential area for accounting errors. By using a PDQ machine, you will be minimising the risk while also keeping your records tidy and less prone to errors.

With so many advantages, there is no reason why businesses, small or large, should not maximise the potential benefits of using a PDQ machine. It will make their operations easier and more orderly while also helping to bring in more card using customers.

Why the chip and pin machine is the real deal

Since its introduction in the UK more than 10 years ago, the chip and pin machine is used by virtually every business that accepts card payments. The biggest advantage of the chip and pin machine is that it process payments in a fast and secure manner. In fact, the reason for the creation of this technology was to enhance the security of card payments and offer protection to both card providers and consumers from the increasing risk of card fraud.

Before the chip and pin machine was introduced, cards had a black magnetic strip on the back that was used by consumers to swipe and sign for goods. This technology had its limitations. It made it very easy for cardholders’ information to be accessed by fraudsters. Chip and pin was created ostensibly to solve this problem and was a hit with the big banks which had been affected by the wave of card fraud.

What is the purpose of the “chip”?

The “chip” is embedded on the card. It is where the cardholder’s 4-digit pin is stored. When the card is inserted, the chip is read by the machine and once the matching pin is entered by the customer, the transaction can then proceed.

With the chip and pin machine, in order to complete any transaction, the customer has to enter the PIN number. This is different to how it used to be when all that was needed was the customer’s signature.

Here are some of the benefits of having a chip and pin machine:

1)Quicker authentication

Before the chip and pin machine was introduced, cardholders had to append their signatures which would then be taken through a process of verification. With the chip and pin machine, the process is as easy as entering a pin number as the authentication is automated. This is definitely faster than requesting and then verifying the signature of a cardholder.

2)Fool-proof

Chip technology is almost impossible to copy. When you add the PIN component to the equation, it makes it harder for fraudsters to access your account when they gain access to your card. Since the introduction of the chip and pin machine, card fraud has reduced significantly.

3)No more chargebacks

With the chip and pin machine you enter your pin and not your signature like it used to be before. The chances of reversals of transactions are reduced significantly. As a result, you are protected from suffering chargebacks caused by transaction reversals.

4)Widespread acceptance

With the widespread adoption of this technology, if you have a chip and pin machine, you will be able to accept card payments from virtually any card provider in the market. It means that you will be able to serve more customers who don’t carry cash around. And the transactions will be secure, which means you will have peace of mind.

A chip and pin machine can still read the magnetic strip card. It is not limited to cards that have the chip and pin component. This is a great incentive as you don’t have to turn away customers who have not upgraded to the new technology. So if your biggest concern was card fraud, the chip and pin machine definitely takes care of you in a major way.

Why does your business need a card reader?

As businesses change, so do consumer habits. This means that the consumer in 2017 is very different from the consumer of, say, 1997. There is a commonly used expression that in life, change is the only constant. Preferences have changed, economic circumstances have changed and technology is more advanced.

Speaking of technology, there are new ways of accepting payments apart from cash. More and more people prefer to carry credit and debit cards rather than liquid cash. And it’s up to businesses to make the necessary adjustments. Having a card reader is one of the changes that you have to make in order to survive in the current business climate.

Here are some of the benefits that you will profit from by having a card reader in your business:

1)More customers

Customers love convenience. Having a card reader means that your business is not limiting customers to just one method of payment. As long as customers can feel that you are satisfying their needs they will keep coming. That is why your card reader needs to be able to accept as many cards as possible.

2)Flexibility

With a card reader, your customers will still be able to clear their payments even when they realise that they did not carry enough cash. With a card, they will just clear the bill and not have to leave some items behind. At the same time, a card reader offers your business more flexibility in the sense that you can take payments while you are on the move or even over the phone.

3)Payments clear quicker

Having a card reader will definitely give you the benefit of seeing your card payments reach your bank account sooner than it would if you were accepting cheques. This means improved cash flows and ease of business planning.

4)Added credibility

Having a card reader is one of the ways you can give your business a more professional outlook. Many of the more established enterprises accept card payments and having a card reader to accept those payments will give you a higher degree of credibility. More customers will feel like they can trust your business.

5)Fewer bad cheques

Accepting cheques has its fair share of risks. It is not uncommon to get a call from the bank to be informed that the cheque you presented could not clear. This can be avoided by having a card reader where your customers will be able to pay using their debit and credit cards. This way, a swipe of the card will be as good as a legitimate payment.

6)Easy setup

A card reader is not very complicated to set up. It’s a very easy process to get it up and working. This means that as long as you have your paperwork in order, you can apply for your card reader and have it in your business within a few days.

Note

When looking for a card reader, you may also want to ensure that it is EMV compliant. Card readers that meet this requirement have more enhanced security features than those that don’t. You don’t want to find yourself liable for someone’s money lost through fraudulent transactions.

Understanding the PDQ machine

Many businesses have a lot to celebrate thanks to the PDQ machine. It has completely changed how businesses approach payment transactions. In a nutshell, payment transactions have become much simpler and quicker.

Previously, customers had to go through the rigours of swiping their cards through a card reader, wait for the payment to be verified and then be required to sign the transaction slip. The signature would then be compared to what appeared on the card.

Despite this tedious process, these transactions were still very susceptible to fraud. It was not uncommon for cards to be stolen or amounts on transactions slips to be changed without the knowledge of the cardholder. By using both a chip and a pin, the possibility of misuse is significantly reduced.

How a PDQ machine works

For starters, PDQ stands for Process Data Quickly. This should definitely give you an idea of what a PDQ machine is all about. It’s about speed and efficiency.

Once you slot your card into the PDQ machine and enter your pin number, the information is relayed to the issuer of the card through an internet connection that is secure. The card issuer will then confirm whether the available funds are sufficient to complete that transaction.

If the funds are sufficient, the money is deducted from the cardholder’s account and deposited into the bank account of the business. If the funds are not enough, the payment will be declined. The process of a PDQ machine is very fast. It takes only a matter of seconds for a transaction to be completed.

Updated versions

The latest PDQ machines now use a card slot. This upgrade came with the trend towards chip and pin technology. The embedded chip took the place of the magnetic strip. It means that as long as customers enter their pin number, they don’t have to sign for goods purchased.

Why use a PDQ machine?

One of the benefits of using a PDQ machine is that customer funds are protected. This is one benefit that customers hold dear. Card fraud has been a big problem in the past and with the new technology, it is not easy for fraudsters to find crucial card details that they would use to commit fraud.

Another major benefit of the PDQ machine is convenience. With transactions taking just a matter of seconds to be completed, both the seller and the customer will find the experience a pleasant one. For a larger business, this can mean that there is no need for extra staff, which means savings for the business.

Another benefit of the PDQ machine that is definitely music to the ears of business owners is that funds appear in the bank account within 3 to 4 working days. Considering the risks of carrying cash to the bank or human error when handling cash, this is a significant plus.

The convenience brought about by the PDQ machine can definitely be harnessed by businesses to increase their sales potential. The business world is highly competitive and it’s all about small margins. As long as you provide your customers with the most convenient options, your business has every chance to grow from strength to strength.

Understanding chip and pin machine

The introduction of the chip and pin machine was hailed as a massive step towards card safety. Before this new introduction, cases of card fraud had been on the rise with authorities scratching their heads trying to figure out how to protect card users. Now everyone can breathe easier as the cases of card fraud have reduced significantly over the last several years.

Although there are other ways that pin numbers can be stolen, the chip and pin machine definitely prevents a case of those pin numbers being subsequently used through card cloning. A chip and pin machine will not allow access to a card that has been cloned.

Chip and pin is now nationwide

The enhanced security of the chip and pin machine is what made the UK government decide to do a nationwide rollout of this project. That was over 10 years ago. Although card payments were still common before then, the process of signing for transactions was tedious and prone to fraud. National roll-outs are never easy but it is fair to say that the government was quite successful with this one. Now the chip and pin machine is used nationwide with cards also having undergone changes to meet the chip and pin requirement.

How a chip and pin machine works

A chip and pin machine is a small device that has a keyboard, a card slot and a small screen. Occasionally, you might come across a chip and pin machine that has separate keypads.

Inside the chip and pin machine is a card reader that reads both the chip and the pin. When a card is slotted into the machine, and the 4-digit pin is entered, the card reader then reads the chip and determines whether the cardholder has sufficient funds for that particular purchase. If the funds are not sufficient, the payment is rejected on the spot.

A chip and pin machine also accepts contactless payments as long as the machine is equipped for it. The customer then has the right to decide the best chip technology in his or her phone.

A chip and pin machine works offline

Another important benefit of a chip and pin machine is that you can use it offline. It means that you will still be able to accept payments during times when the internet is slower or phone signals are weaker.

This is a great departure from the magnetic strip card which required on-the-spot authorisation from the card merchant provider. With a chip and pin machine, there is a provision for transactions to be stored on the machine’s terminal and then transferred at the close of business.

The chip and pin machine and EMV compliance

In today’s virtually fully EMV-compliant market, chip and pin cards are the only card that is universally accepted. This means that the chip and pin machine will continue to be an important part of card payments in the foreseeable future. This also means that chip and pin cards will continue to be issued in all banks in order to stay toe to toe with the universal EMV standard. There is no doubt that card payments have come a long way and will continue to evolve as years go by.

Understanding card payments

In any business, particularly retail, accepting card payments is one of the ways to increase your revenue streams. Any business that does not accept the card payment as a mode of payment is sitting on a goldmine. This is because the card payment is becoming the preferred medium of buying goods and services as more and more people move away from carrying cash.

Here is some useful information that you need to know about card payments:

Merchant account

Contrary to what many people believe, the process involved before one can start accepting card payments is not complicated at all. Depending in how quickly you move, it can only be a matter of days before you accept your first card payment.

Before your business accepts its first card payment, it has to have an account known as the merchant services account. This is an account that serves only one purpose, handling card payments that have been made through credit or debit cards. Without a merchant account, it is not possible to accept card payments.

Point of sale (POS) system

This system will provide you with all the tools that you need in order to process every card payment. It is the most commonly used method of accepting payments made through debit and credit cards. When it comes to selecting a POS, there is a wide array of options to choose from but the most recommended system is an EMV chip together with a compatible card system.

Online virtual terminal

If your business operates a website, accepting online card payments is something that you will want to consider. This is not difficult as your merchant is in a position to set up everything. A merchant will also help you customise your card payment solutions according to your specific business needs while also simplifying the process as much as possible.

What are the most important card payment details?

At the end of the day, the most important thing is getting your money within a reasonable time. The second most important thing is to make your card payment solution easy for your customers to use. Any choices you make, you should strive to accommodate all your customers, irrespective of what cards they use.

EMV – “Chip cards”

Although it’s not a must, it is absolutely vital that you accept those cards that have contain computer chips. These include Europay, Visa and Mastercard. In addition to the fact that they are getting more widely used, they are crucial if your business is to avoid fraudulent transactions.

When accepting any card payment, it’s not just about the card brand that most of your customers use. It is also about the card type. These include debit and credit cards in addition to chip cards.

With the advancement of technology, a card payment can be accepted by a number of different terminals. In addition to the different terminals, there are other features that also add value in how you relate to your customers.

Bottom line

Accepting card payments is all about giving your customers enough payment options. As you weigh the advantages and disadvantages, it is also important to arm yourself with adequate knowledge to put yourself in a position to answer different customer queries.

Things to consider when acquiring a PDQ machine

Any person who owns a business will tell you that the initial stages can be quite stressful. Resources are limited and it’s not easy to get everything you want at once. It means that every time you draw a budget, you are performing a balancing act. A PDQ machine is one of the important items that your business will need.

For small businesses, there is always a lot at stake when deciding to distribute the available resources. Just like most of what you will be acquiring, a PDQ machine still has to go through the normal buying process. It’s all about cost-benefit analysis. Here are some of the factors that will come into consideration in the buying process of a PDQ machine:

New or used

In an ideal world, you would want everything you acquire to be new. But we don’t live in a perfect world. We are always dealing with budget constraints. This is why you will have to make a choice between buying a used PDQ machine or a new one. They all serve the same purpose. At the end of the day, all you want is to be able to give your customers the good service that they need. A used PDQ machine can end up saving you between 25 percent and 50 percent of the cost of a new one. However, with the technical nature of a PDQ machine, it is more advisable to buy a new one rather than opt for a used one.

Buy or rent

There is no doubt that having a PDQ machine is absolutely vital for all businesses nowadays. No one wants to lose a potential customer to the competition because they can’t accept card payments. Before buying or renting a PDQ machine, you should make use of all the information available about the pros and cons of each option. It’s all about finding the right solution without breaking the bank for it. For example, if you are going to a trade show or any other seasonal shop, renting a PDQ machine makes a lot of sense. At the same time, if your view is long-term, buying makes more sense.

Quality over price

You don’t want a machine that is always breaking down. When buying PDQ machine, take your time to consider each model carefully. There are enough online reviews to give you a good idea of what you will be dealing with. Taking the time to do your own research can save you from a lot of problems going forward. You should also know where to take the PDQ machine for repair or service if it happens to have an issue.

Don’t compromise on PDQ machine

Sometimes buying cheap can end up costing more. Even when the budget is tight, there are some items that are still spending some more money on. This helps avoid bigger problems ahead. A PDQ machine is one of those items. With the potential benefits it brings to the business, it is worth every pound spent on it. Invest in the best, it’s worth it.

Although there are many factors that come into play when deciding to acquire a PDQ machine, its importance to a business cannot be underscored. It’s one of the assets that are important for the growth of any business.

The rise and rise of the chip and pin machine

The chip and pin machine continues to change businesses and the way business owners approach card payments. Small businesses are realising that even they can take advantage of this evolving technology to attract customers that were previously the reserve of the bigger, more established businesses. Contrary to past norms, the size of your business does not really matter when it comes to accepting card payments.

A chip and pin machine is vital for all businesses

As long as you have a smartphone, a chip and pin machine, which is the card reader, you are good to go. Although initially many businesses were reluctant to embrace this technology, they are now realizing that every penny counts in today’s highly competitive market. Consumers no longer carry the amounts of cash that they used in years gone by.

In the past, conventional card terminals were not considered to be a big part of small businesses strategies to broaden their revenue base. The monthly fees and rental costs, together with low transaction numbers meant that it was not feasible for a small business to add new expenses in their books in the name of having a card terminal.

But as society reduces its interaction with cash and embraces the use of debit and credit cards, smaller businesses are coming to the realization in order to get their share of the cake, they have to adapt to the new trend. This has also been influenced by the fact that a chip and pin machine is no longer as expensive as card terminals were in the earlier stages.

Is using the chip and pin machine a big challenge for you?

The chip and pin machine is quite different from the card readers that were there before the chip and pin technology. The chip and pin machine is definitely affordable for most small businesses as compared to the traditional card readers. Customers also have to enter their pin number in order to authorize any transaction. This means that transactions are generally more secure with the chip and pin machine.

Preparing for the switch to chip and pin

You cannot start accepting chip and pin cards without having the updated chip and pin machine. The advantage of having a chip and pin machine is that it can read both chip-and-signature and chip-and-pin cards. This means that once you upgrade to a chip and pin machine, you don’t have to worry about how you will handle customers who still use chip-and signature.

All you need to do is to ensure that your staff members know how to use the chip and pin machine. They should know how to process transactions, make refunds and cancel transactions.

Educating consumers

As the proprietor, you should strive to educate those customers who are not conversant with chip and pin machines or the new technology in general. These transactions are not the quickest as a consumer has to insert the card into the chip and pin machine, allow it to decrypt the information on the chip after which it will ask for a pin number and then finalise the transaction. It is only by guiding your customers that they will become good at it and reduce processing time.

The best card reader

We live in a time when payment options are no longer limited to cash. This means that businesses have to make adjustments to keep up with the changing times. While in the past card reader terminals were limited to a few stores, soon after, everyone would catch on and start maximising on the potential benefits of having a card reader option for their customers.

Now virtually every business has modernised. Businesses that use a card reader are fast becoming the norm and not the exception. What’s even better is that the card reader has evolved so much from what was there initially. The modern card reader now accepts almost all card payments. This means that every customer can easily get service irrespective of their card issuer.

How do I choose the right card reader?

In order to choose the right card reader, you have to be clear in your mind about what you want to be able to accomplish. This is always the first step when going to purchase anything. It’s about understanding the full scope of your needs and then going out to find the right solutions.

For example, if your business entails going to sell to people at different locations, you will need a mobile card reader for convenience. On the other hand, if your business is situated in one specific permanent location, you will need a card reader that is more multi-functional. A POS (point of sale) system would suffice in such a situation.

Here are some of the other considerations that you may have to take into account when looking for a card reader:

1)Cost and fees

If you are still a small business, you want to be saving money in order to grow your business. While having a card reader is important for the growth of your business, always remember that you have enough options to choose from. Remember that it’s not about the cost of the card reader but also the monthly and transaction fees involved. Take your time to weigh all your options.

2)Flexibility

Business situations are always changing. It means the card reader you choose should be able to accommodate the circumstances of your business as they change from time to time. A good card reader is the one that can be used at your business premises and also while you are on the move.

3)Compatibility

If your business is currently using specific software, it may be better to get a card reader that is compatible with that software. It makes sense to find the card reader that fits your current software instead of having to make too many changes to accommodate a non-compatible card reader.

4)Accepts a wide variety of cards

A good card reader is the one that accepts a broad range of card payments and doesn’t limit you to only a few cards. This will mean that you don’t have to turn away some of your card using customers sometimes.

5)PCI compliance

If it’s possible, find a card reader that is already PCI compliant rather than having to deal with the compliance separately. This will save you time and money. You don’t want to go through the compliance process again when you have already spent enough time trying to figure out the best card reader.

Some of the available options when choosing card payment machine

More and more businesses are realising that they need to start accepting card payments if they are to expand their customer base and go to the next level. This is because more and more people are moving away from the traditional mode of payment which has always been cash. In order to start accepting card payments, a business must first acquire a card payment machine.

When looking for the best card payment machine solution, there are several options for your business to choose from. The different options are mostly separated by the technology involved in operating them. There are the traditional terminals and the more technologically advanced ones.

Here are some of the options at your disposal when looking for a card payment machine:

1)Mobile payment processing

Wireless mobile technology is among the latest innovations when it comes to credit card processing. While most companies will offer the more traditional terminals that only require swiping the card and collecting the customer’s signature, there are some companies that offer machines that have the ability to accept access through smartphones and other touch tone telephones. There are also some applications that accept access from any 3G mobile phone.

2)Credit card processing

One of the ways to increase your customers is to give them as many payment options as possible. One of the ways businesses are increasing their sales is by offering credit card processing services. When looking to buy a card payment machine, it is important to find a company that meets all your needs when it comes to processing all your customers’ card payments. This is why you need to choose from a wide array of options in order to be as flexible as possible when processing card payments.

3)Processing software

When it comes to internet processing, there are two software versions. The first one involves registers at the point of sale that are connected to a computer terminal. This is the best option if you want to track your payment history by logging into your card processing account.

The second processing software is suitable for e-commerce merchants. It ensures security in card payments by providing access to a payment processing gateway when processing online orders. Gateway services provide extra security for both merchants and customers.

4)Traditional card terminals

Card payment machines that use traditional payment terminals are the most familiar for most people. These terminals are connected to a telephone at the cash register or near it in retail stores, restaurants or any other business. The latest terminals come with the option to connect through an Ethernet connection.

Bottom line

Although there are a variety of options available to you when it comes to choosing card payment machines, it is important to simplify your acquisition process as much as possible. Just go for exactly what your business needs. The best card payment machine is the one that is easy to set up and operate especially if it is handled by employees in a very busy business setting. Receiving money should be a short and quick process. You don’t want your employees to be getting stranded in front of customers when trying to process card payments.

Mobile card payment versus credit card payment

These days it is so commonplace to see people using their mobile phones to pay for goods and services that you wonder how much further technology can change the way people conduct business. More than ever before, there is now a high number of people who prefer the mobile card payment option as their method of payment whenever they make purchases.

Whether you own a coffee shop or you are a customer at a pizza place, the mobile card payment is an integral part of business transactions, and from the look of things, it is here to stay. There are many parallels to be drawn between the mobile card option and the use of the credit card itself.

Let us compare the two methods of payment.

Digital wallet

Now, you no longer have to directly give your credit card information to a vendor when shopping. With mobile card payment, you can complete the entire transaction on your mobile phone. All you need is the vendor to calculate how much you owe him and then do the rest by yourself. You can also complete your transactions online through a service like PayPal, thanks to the digital wallet.

No impersonation with the mobile card payment

If a thief steals your credit card, he can use it to impersonate you at a checkout line, especially if the card does not have the chip-and-pin technology. On the other hand, if you lose your mobile phone, no one can complete any transactions as they cannot access your card details or match your fingerprints which are required in many transactions. To start with, the mobile phone is likely to request for the user’s pin before anybody can use it.

Mobile card payment is more convenient

Compared to payments using credit or debit cards, the mobile card payment is definitely more convenient. Imagine how light your wallet would be if you didn’t have to carry all those cards. You can also store a lot of your documents in your phone and not have to worry about losing them. At the same time, you don’t have to tell your details to a third party as you can complete the transaction by yourself.

Phone tracking is easier

Recovering a lost card can be very difficult compared to finding a lost phone. Phones now have tracking software which means that if you misplace it or it is stolen, you can still identify its location. Once you lose your credit card, it will be very difficult to find it. This is another big difference between using your credit card and mobile phone payment.

Mobile card payment is easier for businesses to set up

For a store owner in a remote location, even if you cannot provide a card facility for your customers, they can still use mobile card payment. This means that they don’t have to cover a long distance because they don’t have access to bank ATMs.

As a business owner, if you haven’t been paying the mobile car payment option serious thought, it is high time you start doing so. Although there are still people who are still holding on to cards as their method of payment, it may long before the mobile card payment is the method of choice for the majority.

How to use the chip and pin machine

Whenever you hear people talking about people talking about a machine that has chip technology, they are essentially talking about the chip and pin machine. The cards accepted by this machine come with an embedded microchip. This microchip contains information that is unique to the cardholder. This includes the name, card number and also the expiration date.

The major feature that sets the chip and pin machine from the machines that were used before is that once a card is accepted, there is no need to sign against the payment in order to authenticate it. At the same time, there is no way to tell the pin if you happen to come across a card that does not belong to you. Everything is stored in the card’s microchip.

Here are some tips to help when you use the chip and pin machine:

Inserting the card

When you insert the card into the chip and pin machine, insert it face up. There are two places in which you can insert the card, the terminal or the pin pad.

Keep the card in the terminal or pin pad

The card has to stay inserted until the transaction has been completed and a receipt printed. If you remove it before completion, the payment will end up not being processed.

Locked pin

When a wrong pin is entered too many times, the card becomes temporarily unusable. The chip and pin machine terminal will notify you whether a signature can suffice. If it doesn’t, the customer may have to pay in cash. After that, it will be up to the customer to contact their card company or bank to have the pin unlocked.

Refunds

There are situations where you might have to refund the cardholder. Just insert the card into the chip and pin machine and proceed with the process of refunding. The cardholder will not be required to key his or her pin.

Follow the chip and pin prompts

When processing a card, you should carefully follow the prompts that appear on the terminal screen. It is the terminal which tells you what to do. As soon as you swipe the chip and pin card, the terminal will give you the next instruction.

Foreign cards

Although this is very rare, it is still possible to find some cardholders from different countries that are using the cards that have a magnetic strip. The chip and pin machine will recognise those cards and give you the instructions to follow.

Declined transactions

There is no special way to handle declined transactions. Just start again and follow the normal procedure. At the same time, declined transactions could be a sign of insufficient funds.

Bottom line

The chip and pin machine is the ideal solution that will help you deliver a more secure way for your customers to pay for goods and services. If you follow the proper processes, this machine will prevent card fraud as well as chargebacks that are related to fraud. Chip technology is not easy to copy and this is why the UK government was so unequivocal in its campaign to spread the use of this card countrywide. What is even better is that the chip pin machine still accepts the magnetic strip cards.

How to choose the best card payment machine

Slowly but surely, the world is moving towards cashless transactions. It will not be long before all businesses are forced by circumstances to start accepting credit and debit card payments. That is why businesses need to arm themselves with the necessary information about what is involved in order to transition smoothly into credit and debit card payments.

If your business intends to start accepting debit and credit card payments, you will need to have a card payment machine. There are many companies that deal in credit card machines. The best way to minimize your chances of getting duped is to look up the dealers’ accreditation and ask for advice from people who are well-versed in this area.

Here are some tips that will help you find the best card payment machine for your business:

1)Understand the fees involved

There are some providers who charge joining fees and some who don’t. As you consider the cost of the card payment machine, remember to factor in the joining fee. The best way to understand the fees that are involved is to request for a representative to come and explain every single detail in the offer and guide you through the paperwork. This way you will understand everything clearly, from the set up to all the fees.

2)What payment types does the machine accept?

The last thing you want to have is a machine that only accepts some debit and credit cards and not others. Having such a machine will mean that sometimes, you will have to turn away some customers whose cards are not accepted by your card payment machine. This is definitely not good for business.

3)How reliable is customer support?

Using a card payment machine will mean that sometimes you will encounter one or two issues with the machine. The issues range from confusing fees to monthly billing statements among others. These are issues that will be resolved by account representatives from the payments processing company. The best company to deal with is the one which provides customer service around the clock on a daily basis.

4)How simple is it to set up?

A good card payment machine should be easy to set up, either by you or your employees. You need to know how complex the machine is to set up or how much time it will take so that you plan accordingly. If you find it quite complicated, seek help from customer support.

5)Don’t restrict yourself to only a few options

Most of the time, when you want to set up a card payments solution, the banks will recommend their own service. But the truth is you can choose to acquire your card payment machine anywhere you want. There are many companies that trade under licence from various card processors. Take your time and consider each option carefully.

6)Seek advice

There are enough well-established businesses that have used card payment machines for a long time that can help you with everything you need to understand. These are great sources of useful information that will help you make the best decision for your own particular circumstances.

Conclusion

The key to finding the best card payment solution lies in finding as much information as possible about the machines and the processes involved in having them operating smoothly in your business. Don’t be hurried into making a decision if you are not ready.

How to choose the best card merchant service

Once you decide to start accepting card payments at your business, it is inevitable that you will find yourself having to choose between different merchant services. It’s always good to have a wide array of options to choose from, but the truth is that sometimes picking the right one is not easy. Your own business needs will determine the choice you make and they may not be similar to those of another business.

There are many merchant services in the market. The most important thing is to take your time to compare the offers on the table with the circumstances of your business. This is the only way that you will be able to find the most suitable solution for your business.

Here are some of the factors that will influence your choice:

Processing fees

For instance, different merchant services charge different fees. That means that by doing your due diligence properly, you can save your business some additional expenses. At the same time, when it comes to calculating the overall cost of the different machines offered by different merchant services, there are different variables that come into play. These include card types, volume and pound value. There are also monthly fees and setup fees that differ according to these variables.

Cash flow

This is another factor that comes into play when selecting the most suitable merchant service. Between the time your credit card sales receipts are processed and the time they reach your bank account, they are held by the merchants. Different merchant services follow different systems. Some will even hold on to your funds just long enough to benefit from the interest income from the funds. A merchant service that takes too long to credit your funds to your bank account can cause you some problems when it comes to your various business plans.

Business size

The volume of transactions and the total revenue that your business generates have a bearing on the fees that different merchant services offer. This means that you should consider the size of your business and how much you expect it to grow in future when selecting a merchant service. The rates also vary depending on your processing method.

Stand-alone merchants

Stand-alone merchant services are known to offer lower rates than the merchant services that are departments at major banks. While on the face of it, it would seem more convenient to use your bank as your merchant service, bank fees are almost always on the higher side.

Customer support

Good merchant services offer their clients sufficient customer support any time they need it. The merchant should always be willing to respond to your queries any time you raise them. This will help you especially in cases where customers raise questions. The merchant service will always be a call away to provide all the necessary answers.

Merchant reviews

There are always some reviews available from people who have used the merchant service. This will give you an idea of what people feel about any particular merchant at any given time. If there are many negative comments about a particular merchant service, that is definitely the one to avoid.

How long a bank payment takes to reach your bank account

The biggest difference between a cash payment and a card payment is that while a cash payment is easy to account for immediately, a card payment takes a while to reflect in your card account. This means that if you have any pending bills, you cannot count on a card payment as it may be a while before the money reflects in your account.

So if you owe money to a bank, it means that you have to take some steps to ensure that you don’t default when instalments fall due just because one or two card payments did not reach your card account in good time.

The amount of time that a card payment takes to show on your card account will depend on when the payment is made, how it is made, the card merchant and your bank. The best way to be certain about when a card payment will reach your account is to get in touch with the card merchant. If there are any pending payments, the card issuer is in a position to tell you when to expect it to show in your account. An issuer will give you the precise time to expect the money in your account.

How about online payments?

While an online payment is generally quick, it is not instant. An online payment can take between 1 to 3 days to show in your card account and give your account its true position. This is because these accounts are not processed in real time but in batches overnight. This means that a payment made on Friday will not reach your account as weekends are not counted as business days.

Linked card accounts

If your card account and bank account are linked, it is possible for your card payment to reflect in your account instantly. That is one of the advantages of having your card and your bank account in the same bank.

How to meet your desired timeframe

The best way to ensure that a card payment reaches your account in good time is to make payments well in advance. At the same time, if you want to have a specific amount in your account as credit, you can request your card issuer for an increase on your credit limit. This is where using your card responsibly helps, as you can easily get an increase whenever you want.

Timely payments

In instances where your card payment does not reflect in your account in good time, as long as you submitted it within the stipulated time, it will be considered to have been paid on time. However, if your bank returns the payment for one reason or another, you will be charged a fee.

Bottom line

One thing about a card payment is that, unlike cash, there are processes involved before it becomes actual money to be spent. It means that you have to consider things very carefully especially when making commitments involving a large amount of cash. But at the same time, a card payment will save you the trouble of having to deal with cash. When you are paid using cash, you still have to go to bank it. On the other hand, with a card payment, all you need to do is to wait for your statements to see if it reached your account.

Determining the cheapest card payment machine

Card payments are growing at a staggering pace in the UK. To keep up with the trend, more and more businesses are adjusting their operations to accommodate customers who prefer this method of payment. They are realising that card holders form a substantial part of the customer base that should be tapped into.

In order for a business to start accepting card payments, it has to have a card payment machine. There are different machines in the market and it is up to you to find one that suits your needs and also fits your budget.

Costs involved

When trying to determine the cheapest card payment machine, there are many factors that come into consideration. It’s not just about the cost of purchasing the machine. The cost of the machine is just one of several variables. The cheapest card payment should not just cost less to purchase but it should also cost less to use in the long run.

In most cases, merchants will sell their machines in at prices that are determined by the specific details of a particular case. That means that the cheapest card payment machine for one business may not necessarily be the cheapest for another.

The cheapest card payment machine is the one that charges the smallest markup above the normal cost of processing. In some cases, some merchants will subsidise the cost depending on how payments are processed. For example in a coffee shop where the average transaction is below 15 pounds, charging per transaction can end up costing the business too much because of the sheer volume of the transactions. In such cases, a flat rate becomes the best option.

Renting versus buying

There is a school of thought that will argue that renting is the best way to get the cheapest card machine. Renting is a viable option for small businesses that are not able to purchase a new machine at a particular moment. It enables them to enjoy the benefits of accepting card payments before they find their own permanent solution.

Another factor that makes renting a machine the best way to get the cheapest card payment machine is that if anything goes wrong with it, your provider will just provide you with a replacement and you will not have to contend with spending money on a new one.

Use some help to find the cheapest option

Luckily for you, you don’t have to go through the trouble of trying to find the cheapest card payment machines. There are companies that can help you find the cheapest option among the multiple machines available. These companies will provide you with instant quotes from different card merchants and all the costs involved. At the same time, they will keep monitoring your statements on your behalf to ensure that you are not being overcharged and that your processing costs are as low as possible.

Bottom line

In truth, it is not easy to find one merchant that offers the cheapest card payment machine. Cheap is relative to the business in question. For example, a business that deals with a high number of transactions is better off choosing the lowest transaction cost even if it means slightly higher monthly fees.

Answering some of the most commonly asked questions about the PDQ machine

If you are in business and you haven’t started accepting card payments, you may be missing out on a lot of revenue. The world is shifting towards cashless transactions and businesses that don’t adapt might soon find themselves losing out to their competitors who accept card payments. If you own a business and you have been considering accepting cashless transactions, you need to consider purchasing a PDQ machine.

It’s always important to view your business from a long-term perspective. While the day to day decisions must still be taken, playing the long game is what makes your vision for the future clearer. So while having a PDQ machine might not bear fruit immediately, it is bound to help your business going forward as now there is more awareness about cashless transactions.

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about the PDQ machine:

What does PDQ stand for?

PDQ stands for Process Data Quickly. The PDQ machine is used for processing transactions where payments are paid using credit or debit cards.

How do I start the process of acquiring the PDQ machine?

If you are new to the concept of card payments, this process can seem insurmountable. But if you are willing to take your time to understand all that it entails, finding and learning how to use a PDQ machine will not be a difficult process for you.

How much does it cost?

There are many options for you and it’s all about choosing what is best for your business. The price of the PDQ machine varies from vendor to vendor and also depending on the model. The best thing to do is to shop around to see where you can get the best deal. Other business owners who use the PDQ machine can offer you useful information that will help your selection process.

How does a PDQ machine work?

When accepting a card payment, you can either enter the total amount owed into the card manually or send it through the connected Point of Sale machine. The customer will then insert his or her card into the PDQ machine and enter their pin code (4-digit). The PDQ machine will then process the transaction, contact the merchant or customer’s bank to request for authorization. If the funds are cleared and the details validated, then an approval will be sent to the PDQ machine and a receipt will be issued upon completion of the transaction. The whole process takes just a matter of seconds through an internet connection.

How does a PDQ machine help my business?

Most businesses are now realising the importance of catering to the needs of their customers who prefer to use credit or debit cards rather than carry cash. While in the past this type of customer was not the norm, in recent years, there has been a big shift towards cashless transactions. It’s now common to see people using their cards to pay bills in hotels or purchases in a supermarket. As long as you don’t have a PDQ machine to accept these card payments, you will be locking out a considerable portion of the consumer base. The PDQ machine is no longer a luxury that businesses can survive without.

Advantages of mobile card payment

As mobile technology advances, there are an increasing number of activities that can be completed through the mobile phone. For example, thanks to mobile wallet applications, it is now possible to shop online and make a mobile card payment. A mobile card payment is beneficial to both customers and businesses.

That is why you will find a large number of online shops giving the mobile card payment option to their customers to make payments of their orders faster and more convenient. With this method of payment, everybody wins. Customers no longer have to waste time filling out forms as a click of the mobile phone is enough to make a purchase.

Here are some of the advantages of a mobile card payment system:

Convenience

With the mobile card payment option, the process of paying for goods and services is no longer complicated. Now you can make payments from anywhere and at any time using an internet-connected mobile device. This is the option for customers who don’t like the hassle of carrying cash or swiping cards.

Secure transactions

By using the option of a mobile card payment, you are no longer susceptible to the risks that come with having to carry cash. At the same time, it is a payment option that is very secure. Your card information is not found in your phone as it is stored in the cloud. This means that even if your phone lands in the wrong hands, no one can extract your card details.

Increased rate of conversions

With the choice of making a mobile card payment, the process of purchasing becomes easier for your customers. This has the potential to increase the number of conversions as well as returning customers. Also, a business can quicken its checkout process and take full advantage of impulse buyers.

Reduced paperwork

The mobile card payment is the ultimate solution to help reduce having to deal with stacks of paperwork, especially during a live promotional event. As long as a buyer can pay through their mobile phone, there is no need to fill out phones to provide credit card or bank information.

Reduced credit card fees

In some instances, a mobile card payment is cheaper than a credit card payment. You might some mobile card payment options that don’t charge any fees to help customers to meet certain incentive levels. It’s up to the user to understand the incentives on offer and see how he or she can save some money.

Tracking customer behaviour

Most new businesses are unable to track the expenditure patterns of their customers or recording what they have sold. With the mobile car payment platform, there is a way that consumer behaviour can be tracked and therefore help companies to understand the behaviour patterns of their customers. This will help in the improvement of service delivery, which will then translate to better business and thereby increase revenues.

Bottom line

The mobile card payment is a trend whose popularity is increasing by the day. Mobile phones are no longer just for watching videos and browsing the internet. They can now be used to make purchases without having to reach for the physical wallet. It’s up to you to look at all the options available and pick the best one for you.

If your business is going to start accepting card payments, it will cost some money to get started. There will also be several fees involved in the day to day use of the card payment machine. Everyone wants to save some money when looking for the most suitable machine for their business. That is why most people strive to find the cheapest card payment machine available.

Understanding the process involved in finding the cheapest card payment machine is crucial. This is because, just like all other items on sale, when it comes to card payment machines, things are not always as they seem. Some machines may seem cheap on the face of it but in truth, they are not.

Here are some of the ways you can find the cheapest card payment machine:

(1)Comparison shopping

Just like any other product, different merchants sell at different prices. This means that you have to invest some time into finding a good number of options to choose from. A Google search is a good place to start. Through the search, you will find a number of companies that deal in card payment machine. The next step will be finding which one of those vendors has the cheapest card payment machine.

(2)Ask around

If you know some businesses that have been using card payment machines for a while, you may want to seek some advice from them on how to find the cheapest card payment machine. A person who has used the machine for a while is very likely to know the ins and outs and all the costs that are involved. They may also advise you on how to find the option that best suits your business.

(3)Research merchant accounts

In order to find the cheapest card payment machine, it is important to be sure that there are no hidden fees that you will learn about later on. There are many card payment machine vendors who don’t disclose the fees involved. You don’t want to find yourself locked in a contract that you wouldn’t have signed in the first place if you had all the necessary information.

(4)Understand your type of business

Different businesses have different needs when it comes to accepting card payments. In order to find the cheapest card payment machine for your business, it is important to understand how your business operates and how frequently you have to use a card machine. Sometimes, a machine that costs you less to purchase can end up costing you more in the long run due to the different transaction costs involved.

(5)Avoid entering transactions manually

The transaction fees involved when you enter a cardholder’s details manually are more than they are when you swipe. This is because they are vulnerable to theft as a thief can use those numbers without needing to have the actual card. So in addition to finding the cheapest card payment machine, you may want to consider swiping over feeding the information manually.

(5)Impose minimum amounts

If your business entails handling small transactions in large numbers, it may be a good idea to impose the minimum acceptable amount to be accepted through a card payment. This will help you minimise the transaction costs involved.

Card payment and online processing are the lifeblood of many businesses. Even if you operate a solely bricks and mortar store on the high street and have no online presence, you are inextricably linked to the digital world.

We take paying at a card terminal for granted as customers. Just twenty years ago, the majority of us still used cash when we went out to the shops. That’s changed dramatically since the digital revolution and most of us now go equipped with our debit or credit cards. More and more often, new technology such as ApplePay is becoming common – you don’t even need a card, you just press your smartphone to the terminal and payment goes through.

Perhaps the biggest challenge for businesses is finding online payment processing that is highly secure and protects customers when they come onto your site and want to buy something. Getting this wrong can be catastrophic.

In the online world, bad news travels quickly. If your online payment system is compromised, customers are likely to take to social media to complain rather than coming direct to you for a resolution. That can give your business a difficult reputational problem to overcome – if people think you are unreliable, they are not going to spend money or give their personal details.

The problem is compounded by the fact that business need to give their customers effortless ways to pay. This has developed from the traditional cash payment to cards, mobile phones and even direct online transfers from bank accounts.

Businesses, whether they are simple startups or large corporations, need to be security minded. You may think that if you are a small business then you are less at risk. Why would a hacker be interested in you, after all? Nothing could be further from the truth. Malicious programs are generally directed at smaller business because they tend to have less in the way of security and are easier to get into.

Choosing the right service for handling card payments and online transactions is as important as working on the security of your own website or your bricks and mortar store. Pick the wrong payment processing service and you could soon find yourself facing customer complaints if things take a bad turn.

In truth, keeping up with the hackers and phishers out there is a constant battle and reputable banks and financial services have whole teams devoted to keeping on top of the latest threats. That security is constantly being updated and it’s worth looking at any merchant service to make sure that it is doing all it can to reduce risk.

Even with the best security in place, there is no guarantee that the service you use won’t be the target of an attack. Having a robust website security solution is imperative but so is choosing who you do business with – whether that’s a product supplier or your merchant service.

Tying your business to a bank that is less than reputable can have major ramifications – they are not likely to have robust security measures in place and you are highly likely to encounter problems if your system can be easily hacked. Our advice is never to take it for granted that these third-party services are as worried about security as your business. Check them out and make sure they take this key issue very seriously indeed.

Building good, strong relationships is an integral part of business success, whether you are running a bricks and mortar shop or operating an ecommerce store. Nowhere is this more important than when looking at banking services.

Which merchant service you choose and how you develop a good relationship with the people who run it should all be integral to the smooth running of your business operation.

Choosing the Right Merchant Bank

When you are first starting out in business, it can often be the path of least resistance to choose the first merchant bank you come across. Like all other things in life, however, you should shop around and take a closer look at the service you are being offered. If you already have a merchant bank but feel that you have made the wrong decision in choosing them, then it might also be time to look around at the market and what’s on offer.

The problem many businesses find is that some merchant banks tend to be poor at communication. That, in turn, can make it very difficult to build a profitable relationship which is flexible to their needs.

When you are choosing your merchant bank you need to:

Check their helplines and support thoroughly. Either give them a test call or research online to see what complaints have been made.

Check the costs you are being asked to pay and compare these with other providers – it can be difficult to do but if you know the sector it’s a lot easier.

While there are many reputable suppliers of merchant services out there, you can also come across ones that are not so great.

The last thing you want is to start using a merchant bank and find there are problems with connections, the tech you are using or the costs you are being charged for the service. If you are not sure about the market and what you should be looking for, choosing a company that helps you find the right card payment or online merchant service is a good option.

Building a Relationship

Gone are the days where we used to have a local bank manager who we could sit down with and chew the fat. Most business relationships are carried out remotely nowadays, either online or via a web chat facility. That doesn’t mean you can’t still build that relationship and get what you want from your service but is a little more difficult.

Doing your research is a good start and understanding how your merchant bank works with customers is important. You want to know how flexible that bank is going to be as your business grows – for instance if you want to take on new payment options to give your own customers choice. You can often tell a lot about a merchant bank, or any other service, from their helpline and support. This includes how flexible they are in dealing with your queries and, perhaps more importantly, how knowledgeable they are.

Do they operate a 24/7 helpline service?

Are they easy to contact?

Do you get a polite and, above all, helpful response?

Are they responsive to changes in the payment market and delivering what your business needs?

All these are important if you want to build a trusting relationship with your merchant bank. It can be difficult to gauge with so many providers available but this relationship should be top of your list when you are looking for a service that compliments and benefits your business.

If someone comes into your store and you don’t have a way for them to pay how they want to pay, what are they likely to do? Customers expect flexibility nowadays and if you don’t deliver, you’re in trouble.

How we pay for goods has changed dramatically over the last few years and is continuing to evolve at a dramatic rate. For those businesses who are failing to keep pace with the latest technology, this presents a significant problem.

The answer to the question above is that your potential customer will find another outlet where they can spend their money how they want.

Cash

Although it’s been dropping away over the last decade or so, 14% of consumers are still using cash to pay for things like everyday purchases, including food. Most bricks and mortar stores accept cash and will continue to do so. But will we ever reach a time when it’s a thing of the past? At some point, maybe. For now, there are still people who carry around money in their wallets and purses.

Credit Cards

Credit cards have also shown a bit of a decline in recent times, most likely because we can now use debit cards which link directly to our bank accounts. High interest rates if you get on the wrong side of repayments is also an issue. People still use them for larger purposes, however, particularly if they want to pay back what they owe over a period of time.

Debit Card

Debit cards have certainly empowered consumers and we wouldn’t have the online ecommerce infrastructure we have today without them. These are also beginning to change with growing technology, including cards that can be simply touched to the terminal and release payment rather than having to key in a code. Consumers tend to prefer this method of payment because there is less risk of racking up a debt as there is with credit cards.

Wireless Transfer

The major change in paying at a store or online is with wireless transfer. This is one area where many store owners have been slow to catch up. Terminals that accept payments directly from mobile phones in store are beginning to increase but they are still something of a rarity in many places. The problem many businesses face is whether to embrace this new technology in the first place and how much it might cost. On the other side of the argument is how much it may cost in the long run if you don’t give your consumer the ability to buy in this way.

Online Payments

Ecommerce stores also need to provide a broad range of ways to pay if they are to attract the right customers. This can include adopting platforms such as PayPal and WorldPay which provide a good deal of flexibility as well as the now traditional debit and credit cards.

One key factor that businesses need to take into account, of course, is data security. This includes choosing the appropriate merchant bank and card payment system all of which can be minefield to navigate with the amount of options out there. Getting the best advice is important at this stage, whether you are just starting out with your business or looking to change your merchant services provider for an existing one.

The first few years of any business are critical to its future success. Making sure that you have all the right branding, products and marketing processes in place is crucial, of course.

But so is ensuring your customers can pay you as easily as possible.

The market across many sectors is saturated at the moment, whether you are operating purely as an ecommerce outlet or have a bricks and mortar store. To ensure success, you have to go that little bit further than all the rest.

Branding is Vital

Without a clearly identifiable brand that people recognise, you are going to find it difficult to garner any long-term success. It’s not just about your logo or a catchy by-line on your store front or website. Branding is about your personal ethos, what you bring to the world and it’s what consumers are going to like about your business model.

According to The Branding Journal:

“Think of a brand like a person, each individual has their own personality, way of dressing, communicating, their own values, friends, characteristics and story to tell. It is this that makes up who we are and it is also these characteristics which make a brand.”

Pick the Right Marketing Channels

It’s never been easier, or more confusing, to market a business than in today’s climate. You have access to numerous channels including email advertising and social media at a low cost. The trick is to find the approaches that yield a good return on investment, both for your money and your time. Learning how to market effectively on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, for example, should be top of your list of skills to master.

Make it Easy to Pay

While entrepreneurs often put their focus into building brand and marketing, they can sometimes forget about the other end of the spectrum. What happens when the customer wants to pay?

If you haven’t got the flexibility to allow payment through a variety of different methods, you are instantly putting yourself at a disadvantage compared to your competitors. Building a good, strong relationship with a merchant bank in the first place is important. That means you’ll be able to cross boundaries and set up payments in different ways, for example, using a card payment machine in store and allowing ApplePay and Paypal transactions or processing credit and debit card payments online.

Keeping Up with the Joneses

Your competitors are important. They certainly won’t be standing still and you need to keep up with them. In bygone years, people used to pay with cash. Now they can access their bank accounts online and transfer money directly to you. If you’re competitor is making it more flexible for their customers to engage, you have to do that too. The good news is that there are services which can provide a free quote to get the best payment facility in place.

That’s not all, if your competitors are updating their sites and improving their product range, you need to think seriously about how you can keep up. Most businesses that fail, do so because a new competitor comes onto the market and simply does things better. If you want to succeed, regularly checking out the competition is a very good idea.

The increasing popularity in card payments has led to observers predicting that they will eventually overtake cash as the preferred mode of payment. Three years ago, the hospitality industry in the UK saw a 6 per cent rise in the use of cashless methods of payment. Operators that did not accept these modes of payment had been left reeling.

This trend shows no signs of slowing down. The credit payment adoption rate is expected to grow by up to 7 percent. This means that businesses that are still reluctant to accept credit and debit card payments can expect to fall even further behind as the trend towards contactless payments continues unabated.

It is clear that the decision two years ago to increase the amount a person can spend using card payments from 20 pounds to 30 pounds was not a bad one. The limit change led to an instant spike in the number of cashless transactions.

The impact of the increased use of card payments has been especially felt in supermarkets and restaurants. Pubs and bars have not been left behind either and have had to adapt their systems to be more adaptive to a society that is increasingly moving away from cash as the standard medium of payment.

Businesses that don’t accept card payments face a big challenge when competing with their competitors who do. According to statistics, they are not “in tune” with what the majority of customers want and risk falling behind and losing out on a lot of additional business.

Lower transaction charges

Part of the reason for the increase in card payment adoption rate is the reduction in transaction charges for both debit and credit cards. Data shows that in the last three years alone, overall charges have dropped by more than 6 percent. A high number of people are now comfortable using card payments to coffee, lunch and grocery bills.

Preferences according to age-groups

There are notable differences in the use of card payments between different age groups. A survey was conducted by Worldpay on 2,000 consumers in the UK. The findings showed that a majority of people over the age of 45 still prefer cash as their method of payment. On the other hand, most 25-to-35-year-olds would rather never have to carry cash.

At the end of the day, all consumers want is to not have to worry about whether they have enough cash in their wallets or not. Whether it’s a coffee date or just another leisurely outing, all they want is to be able to pay in a quick and convenient way.

Ensuring card payments are secure

With the card adoption rates continuing to increase, there is an increasing need to ensure that these payments are safe for both the businesses and the customers. It is up to a business to ensure that customer’s information is kept safe. Customers trust the business which is why the feel comfortable enough to give their cards. The best way to do this is to comply with the highest data security standards possible.

Hackers are increasingly targeting card details. This means that business establishments have to up their game as card breaches are becoming an issue that can no longer be swept under the rug.

In order for any business to grow, it must always adapt to the needs of its customers. The business needs the customers more than the customers need the business. One of the ways a business can adapt to the needs of customers is by accepting credit and debit cards.

Credit and debit cards are growing into some of the most common modes of payments for consumers. This means that any business that does not accept these methods of payment is likely to miss out on sales significantly.

Here are some of the advantages of accepting credit/debit card payments for businesses:

(1)Increased sales

If your business only accepts cash, you may be locking out a significant chunk of the consumer base. Accepting credit and debit cards allows those customers who prefer not to move around with cash an opportunity to come to your business for goods and services.

(2)Improved cash flow

Unlike cheque payments, credit card transactions take a short time to de settled as they are processed electronically. In most cases, you will find the money in your bank account between one and three days. At the same time, a credit card payment is unlikely to bounce the same way a bad cheque would.

(3)They give your business more credibility

Accepting credit and debit cards contributes to the positive outlook of your business. It gives your business some degree of credibility as these modes of payments have always been associated with the bigger more established businesses. They are also a great way to develop a rapport with your customers.

(4)Impulse buys

It’s not always that consumers purchase according to a well-thought out plan. In many instances, they may be attracted by the products you have on your display and decide to buy there and then. If you accept credit and debit cards, you will be able to take full advantage of those customers who don’t like to carry cash.

(5)Online option

These methods of payments are a great avenue for your business to start selling online. Most issuers of debit and credit cards offer these options for businesses that sell through the internet. With this option, your business has an opportunity to expand to an even larger consumer base.

(6)Fair charges

The expense your business incurs for accepting credit cards is so small that even a small and upcoming business can be able to accommodate the charges. At the same time, the increased business opportunities for accepting credit and debit cards outweigh the expenses incurred by far.

(7)Saves time

In addition to bouncing, cheques also require you to take your time to take them to the bank for processing. Plastic money, on the other hand, is processed electronically without you having to follow up. Any anomalies with cards are detected on the spot while with cheques, you may not notice spelling mistakes and incorrect figures.

(8)Peace of mind

It is not inconceivable to imagine the consequences of robbers walking into your establishment and emptying your cash register. By accepting plastic money, you reduce your chances of being robbed of all your sales. If a lot of your money is locked in credit cards and debit card receipts, the impact will not be as big.

Bottom line

Although by accepting credit and debit cards, you will need to spend some time reconciling bank statements, the pros definitely outweigh the cons. If you have not been accepting this option, it may be time to reconsider.

One of the big decisions that any business needs to make is what merchant service it uses. This is the portal that handles card payments, whether online or in store. For SMEs, it is a particularly important choice because they generally have a tighter operating budget – getting value for money and all the usability, flexibility and responsiveness they need is essential.

What Do You Really Need?

The best place to start is with your own, individual business banking needs.

Are you a store owner who wants to make sure you can accept cards when people come into your shop?

Do you want a simple method that ties into your tablet or laptop or something more complex?

How much do you want to be charged for the service?

What range of cards do you need to be able to accept?

Are you also operating online and want to tie up your payment service with your bricks and mortar store?

Do you want a basic merchant service provision that can expand as your business develops?

There are plenty of issues to consider as a small business and it can often be useful to talk them through and get independent, impartial advice from someone who knows the industry.

Shop Around

Not all merchant services are born equal. There are also many of them out there to choose from.

It’s not a simple case of picking any one for your SME and expecting them to provide everything you need. Costs and packages vary which is why you need to be sure of what you need with any card payment system. As with all service purchases nowadays, you should be shopping around as much as possible to find the right deal for your business. Don’t just settle for the first merchant service you come across.

Ask Questions

There are plenty of questions to ask and you shouldn’t let any rep that contacts you simply run through their sales spiel without challenging them. Work out what could go wrong with the service – for example, what happens if a terminal breaks down? – and ask these important questions. There are other more technical issues to understand such as how the merchant service gateway works and what useful features they offer that sets them apart from competitors.

The other area that you obviously need to check out for your SME is the range of fees that a service charges for card payment solutions. These can vary quite considerably between providers and they are not always immediately obvious.

Do Your Research

That means you need to know something about the industry. There are plenty of resources online about choosing the right card payment service and what questions you should be considering. Once you know what you are talking about, you can quiz any rep about what happens if certain things go wrong or if you need to change your service package.

Check the Support

Unfortunately, it’s one area that many merchant services are falling down on at the moment. You have a problem and want to get in contact with someone but find it difficult simply to pick up the phone and get through. Support is important when you choose any service and this is one area that you need to check out thoroughly. You want it to be readily available and helpful once you get the support on the other end of the line.

Getting good advice when choosing your card payment service is vital and something that can benefit your SME immensely. At acceptcardpayments.com we provide a comprehensive and friendly advice service that puts you in contact with the bespoke merchant service that your business needs. Ending up with a poor merchant service and card payment solution can not only badly impact on your business it can cost you money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Why Your Small Business Needs to Make It Easy for Customers to Pay

Starting a business is easier than ever. Confidence is currently high when it comes to entrepreneurial spirit and endeavour. Many people, from all walks of life, have decided to take the plunge and start a new venture.

Some of us are doing it from home, using our own unique set of skills to create the services and ecommerce solutions that people are looking for. Others are opening shops that provide niche products to the local community or sell to customers across the world.

In the UK alone, more than 2 million small businesses have started since the beginning of the millennium. The set-up costs are often low and the amount of support available through various outsourcing opportunities has expanded in recent years, including for IT and banking services.

That doesn’t take away from the stark fact that many new businesses still fail within their first five years. But we’re certainly getting the entrepreneurial bug and it’s boosting the economy.

One issue that any business needs to work out is how it accepts payments from its customers.

With the rapid development of online shopping and most of us now owning hi-tech smartphones that allow us to buy on the move, making it easy to pay needs to be a priority. Providing a simple to use card payment solution for your customers online or in your shop has a number of advantages:

The easier you can make it, the more likely a customer is to return to your site or shop and buy other products or hire your service again.

Consumers expect easy pay now, whether that’s linking up to their card details or Paypal account online or when they step into your store and decide to buy something using their new contactless card.

People are carrying less cash around with them. More of us work with various tools such as WorldPay that allow automatic debiting from our accounts.

That’s because it’s so easy and convenient to do this. If you’re shop or office only works on cash, that means your customer must go and find a machine to draw out some money.

Having a good, secure card payment system through a merchant service means you open up your business to more of the world.

Payments by card are growing both online and in store and staff are handling less cash than they have ever done before. A good payment card service therefore makes your business flexible.

Finding the Right Card Payment Solution

As with many other industries, the merchant services sector has grown with the online business world in recent years. It can be confusing and difficult to find the right service that is tailored to your specific needs and which operates within your budget restrictions. Added into this is the fact that many merchant services don’t provide the personal level of customer help and advice that allows business owners to make good operational decisions.

At acceptcardpayments.com, we’ve put together the perfect advice and guidance that helps you choose the best merchant service for your needs, whether you’re a small start-up or a successful, growing business, bricks and mortar store or running and ecommerce site. Card payment should be simple for everyone to use including you and your business – you want something that handles a wide variety of card types and can be set up with little or no trouble while keeping your customers secure.

Back before the world of ecommerce really took off, signing up for a merchant account to process card payments was costly and often difficult. Nowadays, everyone seems to be opening an online store and going into business for themselves.

That’s led to a revolution in the merchant services marketplace.

The good news is that is now easier than ever to find a card payment service whatever the size of your business. The bad news is that some SMEs are still not making smart choices when it comes to selecting the right provider.

The first mistake small businesses make is believing that all merchant services are the same. They pick the first one they come across, apply and start working with them without really understanding fully what they are getting into. That includes what fees they are expected to pay for credit and debit card payments and what happens if something goes wrong including who is responsible.

Reading the Terms and Conditions: Surprisingly, this is something that many small business owners fail to do properly. They give the small print a cursory glance and sign up for their merchant service without being entirely sure what their commitment is. While many merchant services are reputable, this is a crowded market place and there are others who are not so concerned about your future success or delivering the kind of service you are looking for.

Hidden Fees: When you sign up for a merchant service and start to discover a bunch of hidden fees being applied to your account, it can be very frustrating as well as costing you money. There are several reasons for this – the merchant service could be a new company and not have the right processes or transparency in place or you might have been deliberately deceived by the rep who dealt with you.

Terms of Contract and Cancellations: These can vary in length up to about three years and means you are tied to that service for that set time. Cancelling your agreement can cost, if you decide to leave so it really is worth checking those T’s and C’s.

Commitment to Volume: When you sign up for a merchant service you may also have agreed to produce a certain volume of sales per month. This can change, particularly for small business that have, for instance, a dependence on seasonal trade. You are more likely to find this kind of restriction in the US than in places like Europe or Canada, where it is considered unfair.

There may be other reasons why you could have chosen the wrong merchant account. One of the biggest complaints in recent years has been the level of customer service these organisations offer. How easy is your merchant provider to get hold of? Did you get a professional and timely response to your query? If you’re frustrated at not being able to get a solution to an issue, you are not alone. Quite a few merchant services are failing in this area at the moment.

If you are concerned about your current card payment service and want to change, it pays to get some good, impartial advice. Acceptcardpayments.com was set up to do just that, enabling small businesses to get the right merchant service in place which is not only tailored to their needs but is flexible enough to change when that SME begins to grow and thrive.

If you’re starting a business, to improve your bottom line you will want to accept payments from customers and clients as flexibly as possible. Why some people still do use cash, most of us nowadays simply carry our cards around with us. If you don’t have a card payment terminal to hand, you could be losing out on a lot of business.

To handle any card transactions, of course, you need to hold a merchant account.

What is it?

A merchant account is specifically designed to take debit card and credit card payments from your business. In the past, this was fairly costly business for SMEs and was often difficult to set up. With the development of better online resources, however, the merchant services industry has exploded, the cost has come down and accessibility has vastly improved.

Payment Gateways and Payment Processors

When you start looking at merchant services, the first term you’ll probably come across is the payment gateway. If you are using a card machine in a store this transaction goes to the card company to see if the person paying has enough money in their account. For ecommerce transactions, the payment gateway accepts the order and processes the transfer of money from the cardholder’s account to the merchant account of the business.

The other term you might hear is payment processor. Most people think this is the merchant service but it’s really the payment service that the gateway sends information to. Payment processors also handle other transactions such as chargeback requests when a customer requires a refund.

Applying for Merchant Account

You can’t just set up a merchant account, you need to apply for it and be accepted by the provider. This is because each time a card transaction is undertaken, for the merchant service there is a risk and the potential for it to be fraudulent either on the customer’s side or that of the business. All reputable merchant services therefore have a screening service (and may charge for you to apply). The application process generally involves:

Providing financial statements for your business: For startups this can be problematic as they’ve only just begun trading, though in most cases the potential that you have a lower trading volume could well see you accepted.

Processing history: If you are swapping from an existing merchant service to a new one, they will look at this to see if there have been any problems.

Getting the Right Advice

The number of merchant services out there is good news in one way for small businesses – there’s plenty of choice.

Rather than asking the question how to take card payments online, should we be asking how do we need to take card payments? And how can we provide customers with a fast and simple ways to pay?

We are now dealing with customer data, so a secure card payment gateway is vital when considering how to take card payments online. We also need to clarify what you mean by how to take card payments online. Is it via your website that you are looking to take credit card, debit card payments?

Following this cycle, we ask how to take card payments online. Payments Via a Website, then next choice is a Hosted Payment Page or Integrated Payment page

Explanation of a Hosted payment page would be when the customer wants to pay, they are directed to a secure hosted payment page which will appear on your site. You do not handle or transmit the card data. This often works for a new online business, as transactions are processed through a ready-made payment page.

How to take card payments online using an Integrated Page, this is where a page sits on your website. This means that you will have to meet the Data Security Standards. The advantage is it gives you complete control over the look and feel of the payment page, and the customer will not leave your website giving a seamless experience. If you are a business with a large online customer base this may work better than a Hosted payment page.

We have been asked about online credit card terminal.

In the industry terms, there is no such existence as an online credit card terminal. This could be referring to one of two things.

The first being a Virtual Terminal this is a web-based system. This system allows you to manually process credit or debit card orders. This arrangement is used when dealing with orders placed via Telephone and where payments needs to be taken for that Order or for orders received by Mail where payment is not received with the order.

Secondly when people are talking about an online credit card terminal, this could be an Online Payment Gateway. This will enable you to take safe and secure credit card, debit card payments through your website.

So, online credit card terminal we need to know the way that the order will be taken and, how payments will be made. Through your website, Mail Order / Telephone Order (MOTO) all of these fall under the banner of Cardholder Not Present ( https://acceptcardpayments.com/card-payment-terminology/ ) where the cardholder cannot be physically present.

Taking payments through your website has never been easier and, the same can be said for Telephone orders.

These forms of secure and fast transactions, and helping businesses expand to overseas customers.

If you are still not sure which is the right choice for you then ask these questions:

· Will you need to manually enter mail order/telephone order (MOTO) if yes then think web-based virtual terminal.

· Will your customers need to make payment online, if yes then think Payment Gateway.

Give ACP a call on 0333 305 4500 or email hello@acceptcardpayments.com and let us help you find the best Online Credit Card Terminal for your business, and yes we know that an Online Credit Card Terminal is a made up term but let us help you find you right card payment solution suited to your needs. Simply fill out a few details on our free quote page and we will call you straight back.

If you are new to telephone credit card processing then it might help if we break down the jargon a little for you.

When you are doing your searches or comparisons, one of the first things you will come across is the term Virtual Terminal, so how does this relate to telephone credit card processing? Well a virtual terminal is basically the web version of a physical credit card terminal.

How do they work:

You log in via a web browser to your secure card payment page.

Input the card details manually.

Click process payment.

If you have decided to look into the telephone credit card processing side of things it must serve your needs. If you are able to accept card payments quickly and easily, it will show a high level of professionalism to the customer on the phone.

Things to consider when thinking about applying for a telephone credit card processing service:

Your telephone credit card processing payments are they one off payments, or do you need to be able to schedule payments for the future?

You will see no contract used a lot when looking into telephone credit card processing. You will need to know which is best option for you, as No Contract can often be placed with higher rates. One very important question is, what do you believe your annual payments will be via the telephone credit card processing side.

Having a good payment process means that you will get paid quicker. Invoices can be paid instantly and securely over the phone via a telephone credit card processing service which can help speed up payments.

With a telephone credit card processing service such as a Virtual Terminal your business can accept credit and debit card payments by phone. This is accessible from a PC, smartphone, tablet or any compatible device.

Make sure that you know the process well because if you are accepting payments over the telephone, you need to make your customers feel secure.

If you use a payment gateway, ensure that the Virtual Terminal will be compatible. If you are unaware of the gateway function please see https://acceptcardpayments.com/card-payment-terminology/. All you need to do is simply enter the card details and cardholder details into a secure card payment form, this will connect to your payment gateway for authorisation. A transaction should only take seconds to process and a response is sent back to you for confirmation. Telephone credit card processing can be that simple.

There are factors that need to be considered when looking at telephone credit card processing. So why not contact ACP today, and see if we can help? We offer a free quote for your telephone credit card processing needs, or if you prefer you can call on 0333 305 4500.

There are addition devices that can be used to make a contactless payment such as key fobs Smart Cards and others including Smartphones. However, in this section we have covered payments made when using a card that has contactless payment technology.

There are no additional fees for using the contactless payment card however standard fees and charges may be applied. Designed for the smaller payments with the average being £8.97 in in the third quarter of 2016. Up from £7.12 in the same period in 2015.

It is also claimed that 21% of card payments made were done so using contactless payment technology, this accounted for just over 1 in 5 transactions.

When they first arrived, some people were concerned that they might make multiple payments for the same item. With the contactless payment card, each transaction has to be completed or void before the next one. This system has been put in place as a safeguard.

If you see the symbol below on your card then that means that your card comes with contactless payment technology:

You will know if the retailer is able to accept contactless payments, as they will display the contactless payment symbol below:

Contactless is not set up to be used at a ATM. At an ATM you will need to insert your card and input the pin number in the usual manner and the same applies for cash back. This is also not available on contactless currently. However, the card can be used to make a standard Chip and PIN transaction If you wish to receive cash back.

How does a contactless payment card work?

Contactless debit and contactless credit cards have a small chip in them, this emits radio waves.

So, to pay for something using this system you hold the card near a payment terminal this will pick up a signal and processes the transaction.

The reader will introduce itself’ to the card, once the card recognises the reader it will then reply with the required coded data.

Contactless cards have a number of security features. These range from a payment limit which is generally around £30 on a single transaction, to a limited number of uses before the customer is asked for their pin.

Safety is important as a card may look like a simple piece of plastic, and uncomplicated, but it holds a great deal more than it appears on the outside. So, we would suggest checking your statements, you should do this on a regular basis, when using contactless don’t feel that you can’t ask for a receipt. People are finding that receipts are not offered when using contactless. Not all merchants will, however they can very easily supply you with one.

This page contains consumer credit and debt statistics – including statistics on credit card debt, card ownership, fraud, debit cards, bankruptcies and more – compiled by a UK.CreditCards.com research team. Statistics on this page will be updated periodically.

Card ownership and use

As of October 2016, there were a total of 100.1 million contactless cards in issue in the UK. Of these, 31.5 million were credit/charge cards.14

68.7 million contactless debit cards were in circulation as of October 2016, accounting for 69% of total debit cards in issue and up from 53% the previous year.2

In September 2015, the UK Cards Association increased the cap on tap-and-go contactless payments to £30. This new limit continues to fuel the use of cards.1

100.1 million debit cards were in circulation in the UK as of October 2016, down from 100.3 million in September 2016, but up from 98.4 million in October 2015.2

The number of contactless debit cards in circulation increased from 74.5 million to 97 million between August 2015 and August 2016.4

Borrowing and spending

Annual growth in high street banks’ credit card borrowing was 6.2% in March 2016, exceeding growth in the wider (all issuers) credit card market which grew at an annual rate of 5.7%.9

There were 223 million credit card purchases in March 2016, with a total value of £12.6 billion. This spending volume was 2% higher than in March 2015, with an aggregate value 1% lower.9

About 60 million credit cards were in issue as of March 2016, relating to 50 million accounts. About 67% of these were active at the end of March (i.e. carrying a balance relating to card spending and extended credit). About 42% of all balances in aggregate incur no interest at all.9

Debit card spending

During October 2016 domestic spending on debit amounted to £39.2 billion, a 0.8% increase on the month before. This was the lowest growth rate since May 2016.2

The growth in the number of purchases made on debit in the UK in October 2016 also slowed to a six-month low of 971 million. This subdued growth could be explained, in part, by the high level of uncertainty in the UK’s economic performance following the Brexit vote earlier in 2016, contributing to a fall in consumer confidence.2

The domestic average transaction value (ATV) for debit cards fell by 8p between September and October 2016, to £40.36, the lowest level since May 2003. This measure has declined notably since peaking at £48.69 in June 2010, mainly driven by growing adoption of contactless cards, changing consumer shopping habits coupled with continuing supermarket price wars.2

International ATV, meanwhile, increased for the first time in three months to £27.00. The average monthly spend per card reached the highest level on record, at £428, and the average monthly number of purchases per card also reached a record high at 11.04 during that month.2

In October 2016, each debit card was used to make on average 9.7 payments, while the average monthly spend per card increased by £4 to £392.2

International debit card transactional activity continued to grow at a faster rate than domestic spending, albeit from a much lower base. The number of international purchases rose in October 2016 by 1.9% to reach 133 million compared to 131 million in September 2016 and 122 in October 2015.2

Each debit card was used to make 1.33 international purchases in October 2016, compared with 1.24 in October 2015, while the average spend per card was £35.92, compared to £33.15 in October 2015.2

General card spending

Payment card spending in Q3 2016 amounted to £163 billion generated from a record 3.7 billion transactions. Card spending accounted for 77.1% of national retail sales by the end of Q3 2016. ATV registered a quarter-on-quarter increase for the first time since 2013, driven by foreign-issued credit card activity in Q3 2016.6

Payment card spending amounted to £54.7 billion in September 2016, up by 0.6% on August.3

In September 2016, there were 1.3 billion card transactions, 157 million of which were online purchases. Spending online amounted to £12.7 billion.3

Growth in card spending continued to slow down in September 2016 with an annual rate of 4.0% – more than twice lower than September 2015 (8.3%). Slower growth in card spending could be linked to an uptick in the annual consumer price inflation rate to a 22-month high, along with lower consumer confidence after the Brexit vote.3

There was a slight decrease in the average transaction value (ATV) on all payment cards, which fell by 4p to £43.45 in September 2016, well below the level in September 2015 (£45.51).3

Contactless card spending

£2,903.2 million was spent in the UK in November 2016 using a contactless card. This is an increase of 3.6% on the previous month and an increase of 183.5% on the previous year. The value is split between debit (£2,553.9 million) and credit / charge cards (£349.3 million).14

The volume is split between debit (286.1 million) and credit/charge cards (38.5 million).14

As of November 2016, 439,623 bank-owned terminals are available in the UK where contactless cardholders can make a contactless transaction. This is an increase of 2.3% on the previous month and 44.5% over the year.14

In terms of overall losses, payment card gross fraud showed a slight increase of 1% to £249.9 million in the six months to June 2015, compared with the same period in 2014. However, this period also saw a substantial growth in overall card spending which means card fraud as a proportion of purchases fell to 6.9p for every £100 spent, the lowest level since 2011.1

The UK saw Europe’s largest annual jump in card fraud losses for 2015, according to analysts at FICO. Card fraud rose in 10 of the 19 countries studied, with Greece, Denmark, France and Russia posting the highest rises after the UK.7

Most of the 18% rise in losses in 2015 came from online transactions, reflecting the growth in this channel, the ease of accessibility to funds and lower risk for criminals and the theft of personal data through cybercrime.7

The UK contributed about 43% of the total card fraud losses across the 19 European countries studied.7

Remote purchase fraud increased by 31% to £224.1 million between January and June 2016, compared to £171.7 million in the same period of 2015. Intelligence suggests fraudsters are using card details obtained with malware and data breaches, while there are more opportunities to commit such crimes because of the growing number of e-commerce sites.11

when merchants are with their customers face to face – or used to manually key in the card details for a card-not-present transaction.
With an internet ‘till’ merchants do not use a standard, physical terminal to process their transactions. A merchant will use a virtual terminal or payment page provided by a payment service provider on their websites.

Taking card payments for small business may seem to involve time and effort but weigh that against the loss of revenue. It can affect the business from the day-to-day running of your business to the profit generated.

There are several advantages to accepting card payments

Potential increase in profits

Gives your business more credibility

Easier for your customers

Less cash on the premises

Detailed statements

Internet and phone payments

There are 5 steps to ensure the business understands what they are doing, how it is done and gets working as soon as possible.

Getting set up with a Merchant Account

The processing equipment

Finding an online processor which works according needs

Having a good understanding of the fees and rates involved

Understanding the various rules which cover the usage of card payments and business

How Is All This Done?

First step
To start the process an application must be submitted. Click here to start a merchant account application. Once completed it is simply a matter of time before you may or may not get issued with an account.

Second Step
Once the permission is granted, then the business should consider the type of equipment needed to process the cards. This can be supplied by the company arranging your Merchant Account and ensures that all are comparable. What will make it easier for you and easier for your customer.

Third Step
If the small business uses their own bank account to process, the cards they will have to also impart their own credit card details, no big deal if the credit card comes from that bank. Otherwise, they can apply to use PayPal or one of those types of accounts. Generally, PayPal is possibly the best known and trusted third-party supplier. It is also less-costly in fees and rates.

Fourth Step
Taking card payments for small business is a great way to run a business because of the convenience to customers, but it needs a reasonable understanding of the fees and rates that go with it here may also be additional fees. The best idea is to talk it through make sure that you are getting what is right for your business.

Fifth Step
Although taking card payments for small business is a great help to the business, it pays to understand the laws and rules again your provider can help with this

Worldpay started as an electronic payment system called Streamline which was first released by CentreFile in 1989 in the UK but has extended into mail order/telephone order, “unattended” payments and handling secure payments over the Internet through merger and acquisition of several other companies

2010, Worldpay had become the largest merchant acquirer in Europe and one of the largest globally. In late 2010, RBS sold Worldpay to Bain Capital and Advent International. This allowed Worldpay to retain the benefits of our heritage, yet transform the business to become more customer-centric, entrepreneurial and innovative.

Since becoming an independent company, they have invested over £1 billion in their business with approximately £400 million invested in technology. This gives our customers speed, reliability and security as well as rich and easy-to-use functionality.

In June 2013, Worldpay launched Worldpay Zinc, a mobile card processing terminal which connects to smart phones

AcceptCardPayments.com and Worldpay will be working closely together to provide payment services for mail order and Internet retailers, as well as point of sale transactions.

Introduction
There are many of options when it comes to the processing of credit and debit cards

Online
Credit and debit card payments let you sell your goods and services online

Point of sale
You can accept debit and credit card payments at the point of sale

Over the phone
You may be able to accept credit card payments over the phone

By mail

You can accept credit and debit card payments by mail.

Whichever method you choose it allows transfer of money to be quick and easy. In this section we will be making a quick introduction to the Point of Sale method Electronic funds transfer at the point of sale (EFTPOS) is a payment system that lets your customers pay directly using an EFTPOS machine using card, such as a bankcard, credit card or debit card.

Some small businesses shy away from using this system as they assume it is expensive. Yes there are service fees and transaction fees in some cases but, this has to be considered against the loss of trade. Not only of that single transaction but also of repeat business. Card payment option is becoming more and more expected as a way of making a payment. From anything from a car to a coffee

How Does a Small Business Go about Obtaining a Machine and which is best for you?
There are a few ways that your business can decide which card processing machine they should use. These vary for

Stationary Credit Card Processing Machines

These machines require a direct, physical connection to a phone line or the Internet. They are also known as a countertop. A Countertop Machine has to be corded and needs to be compatible with the POS (Point of Sale) computer. These are very stable and allow most transactions to be processed quickly. These machines can be set to except the different types of customer present payments such as
Chip & PIN
Chip and signature
Contactless
Magnetic stripe

Wireless Credit Card Processing Machines

The wireless machine does not require a direct connection to a phone line or network, making it ideal for merchants who want to take the machine to the customer. These are perfect for restaurants and cafes where the customers are sitting, allowing them to get up and leave when they wish, instead of having to wait at a transaction point to put their card through. They are very flexible and improved the customer experience.

Costs
There can be a number of fees that will be incurred for the terminal these can vary from the list below.

Setup fee.

Monthly rental.

Payment for service to the unit.

Perhaps printing costs. The machine will most probably have an internal printer but paper will still be needed for receipts.

A fee for interchange

Many suppliers will bundle these costs into one, they can and will vary from provider to provider and should be taken into consideration when making your decision on who is the best provider for you. Some providers have yet more charges to add. Then again some suppliers may just charge a set fee for the lease of the machine and forget the set-up fees. Each supplier has their own set-up system ways to

A card payment machine for a small business can be an expense that is not justified. So get the right advice. Set the system that is right for you. Add in the fees charges as well as the transaction rate when making your decision on which card processing solution is best for you.

The answer is more than likely yes

In this day and age, every business must make it as easy as possible for people to make payment. We have all seen people walk away because no cash or a copy does not take cards. Arranging for you to be able to accept Card payments has never been easier. Fewer and fewer companies are now cash only sales and, people’s expectations is that they will be able to pay by card and that your business will accept card payments.

Accepting Card payments has never been easier or quicker to arrange.

With a few question about your existing set up and your requirements a system can be put into action that will be quick, easy and affordable

To a customer, having to divulge their bank information for a large purchase is both time consuming and annoying and with changing times not everybody will know there details. If your small business is accepting Card payments, it is better for all concerned, encouraging a customer to return is key, making there transaction quick and easy just adds to the feel of good customer service.

How to Set It Up

If you are not currently accepting Card payments then there is a simple process to follow The process is quick and most financial institutions will approve a basic form of merchant account in a few working days. This will allow the business to accept card payments via cards such as Visa and Mastercard,

When making the application think about the type of service you want to give, how will be you customers, what will the maximum and minimum value of a standard transaction? How many card transaction in an average day.

Think about your customer who they are and what they need

When applying for a merchant account give as much information as possible, give the correct information. Get it right at this stage and the whole process will be quicker and easier. Card payment applications means that the business applying will have to show certain criteria that will help the provider make a decision of the type of business and the risks involved.

What Is Needed To Run The Application?

Depending on your requirement the software and, hardware might differ. This will depend on many different factors such as: Will you be taking payment with the customer present or, will a customer not present process be needed. There can be a mix of both but, take time to think what a realistic percentage of each might be. The percentage does not have to be 100% correct but the more accurate the better and, the percentage might affect the rate you will be charged. If website payments them again there is a different route needed.

The company arranging the merchant account for you will be able to help and give advice. They can also arrange any and all equipment needed to ensure that the payment process can be set up correctly

What Else Can Be Explored in relation to card payments?

Different companies will offer different rates. Don’t just think about the percentage being offered on transaction. Look at the monthly fee charged. Is there a cost per transaction and what the minimal cost of these is and how many transactions are you allowed before you possibly have to pay a higher rate? Equipment charges / rental and length of contact also needs to be taken into consideration
Should the business not wish to go through their direct financial institute, then there are other ways of being able to accept Card payments. That particular business can then apply to use a third-party company, such as PayPal. The forms are much the same, but the terms can be quite different.
